The following blog is essentially a visual recap of my experience volunteering for St. Jude, the reasons I recommend it to people interested in volunteering in Uganda, plus helpful links to information on how to get involved and support St. Jude mission or simply connect with the larger community of St. Jude supporters. Whether you travel to Uganda or choose to help from home, it is my hope you will find this blog interesting and useful.
Check out these moving images of St. Jude Children's Home and the innocent victims of the civil war led by Joseph Kony and his rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA): the LRA has tortured millions of innocent people from the Acholi tribes in Northern regions of Uganda for over 20 years.
St. Jude is located in the northern region of Uganda in the small town of Gulu and is overseen by Comboni Missionary Brother Elio Croce, who is also responsible for the Technical Unit at Gulu's hospital, St. Mary's Lacor Hospital.
The Mercy Project: "St. Jude Children's Home . . . a Catholic non-profit organization founded in 1982. . . . helps . . . care for 145 vulnerable children in the community of Gulu, Northern Uganda. It is a family for orphans, abandoned children, children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, children born in captivity, and children with disabilities. Their mission is to provide a loving environment where they aim to offer comprehensive care for these children including health care, education, and emotional and spiritual support. Presently St. Jude's Children's Home struggles to satisfy all the basic needs of every child under its care due to a lack of much needed funding and other resources. Limited funds held even greater gravity on those children suffering from spinal cord injuries, epilepsy or muscular dystrophy."
